Excerpt from Peter's Basic Tarot Course:

The basic emphasis of tarot is the Fool’s journey through life where a deck of cards is divided into two specific categories: The Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. In the Major Arcana, the Fool dances through all twelve zodiac signs and our ten major planets. It is thought that we live many different lifetimes and take turns in different zodiac signs with the planets in our solar system affecting our journey.  The cause and effect situations in our life or the ‘karmic matrix’ is described by the ‘Minor Arcana’ comprised of 56 cards divided into four elements.  Commonly, the Swords reflect ‘air’, the Wands, ‘fire’, the Cups, ‘water’ and the Pentacles, ‘earth’. Each element represents a different part of life ranging from emotions and thinking to energy output and material blessings.

Tarot is actually the feminine form of astrology where a normal deck not only has pictorial definition on each card but also some astrological relationship. The pictures reflect the Fool’s struggle as different events in life come up.  There are literally hundreds of definitions around the meaning in each card. I am going to teach you both the simple definitions of the signs and planets as well as the astrological determinations in the Minor Arcana.  As you read for others these definitions will expand through your own intuition. You are welcome to use the book that comes with most decks and read the author’s opinions. The Minor Arcana is divided into two levels internally with ‘Court Cards’: The Kings, Queens, Princes and Princesses, then the rest of the peanut gallery, so to speak.

The Fool is us and our effort to understand this complicated life. There are many different ways to read a deck. These are called ‘Layouts’ or ‘Spreads. You can read anywhere from four to as many as fifteen different cards in a single spread. I am going to teach a twelve card spread with three vertical columns of three cards each, and one row of cards horizontally over the top of these three rows.  The more cards you are exposed to, the quicker you will learn their meaning. I will further identify that as you lay the first three cards in the left column from top to bottom, the next three cards in the middle column from top to bottom and then the right column doing the same, you not only have three vertical columns but three horizontal rows.  Then as you spread the last three left to right over the top of these three columns, you have created a little heaven trying to reach into the lower columns. That heaven can be just guides, angels, or any number of enlightened beings trying to bring a message in.
